Water Hammer (Hot Water)

A few months ago, I shut the water off in my 10 yr old home to install flexible tubing to a toilet water tank। After installing the tubing and turning the water on again, I started to receive the most obnoxious water hammer when a particular hot water faucet is turned on. It sounds like someone is literally trying to kick a door in. This does not occur when the water is turned off. This does not occur with the cold water tap; only the hot water tap in the first floor bathroom. It does not occur if I turn on the cold and hot water taps simultaneously. It only happens if I turn on the hot water tap by itself. And its getting progressively worse. I have been told that I can do something along the lines of shutting down the water again, then slowly, gradually turn the water back on to eliminate air in the pipes. That struck me as strange because it would appear to me that trapped air would long since have found its way out by now. I do not want to create a situation where I have mutilple pipes hammering so I am seeking advice on what my next steps should be. Please advise.

You might want to replace the washer in that faucet। a loose washer will sound like a jack hammer when it starts banging. good luck

1930’s house

I’m about to move into a 1930’s house that my mother grew up in, and she’s told me that of the bath/shower combo in the master bathroom, the bath faucet has not been used in years (about 15-20), and the shower has NEVER been used॥ since the house was built! (there is a second, very small bathroom with a shower that I guess everyone used)। I want to use this bath/shower… what is the best way to check that it is okay to use? Or do I have to call a professional out right away to check? Many thanks!

Quality faucets from reputable manufacturers can outlive the life of the chrome finish on them। if they are not abused, and by that I mean you keep on top of what little care they demand good ones can go well past the 30 year mark. Water quality is a big factor. Some brands don’t survive long in hard water. Some don’t give a hoot what’s running through them. by a wide margin, the main nemesis of faucets is the abuse they take and continued use of them long after they started developing problems. so before calling a professional turn on faucet and check for leaks around handles, and make sure it don’t drip when shut off, if it leaks or drips call a plumber to fix or replace. good luck

faucet leak

Hi, I bought the kit from Home Depot and replaced the handles, flanges, stems and faucet seats in the tub। I have not replaced the diverter one yet though, just on the hot and cold. This was about a month ago, and it was fine. About 3 or 4 days ago I noticed it’s not turning off all the way now and the handles were loose. It is Price Pfister, and the house is about 30 years old. My question is this. Could this be because I didn’t replace the diverter yet, or could I have possibly bought the wrong size? It’s not leaking from the handles, as far as I can tell. Just coming out of the faucet. It’s not coming out extremely fast, but enough to need fixing. Is there some other cause I need to look at also? Thanks for any help.

That is amazing you bought the parts as I found Price Pfister and Delta to be amazing companies when it comes to sending FREE parts once you contact them and give them a model number. One of my accounts has a Price Pfister kitchen faucet leaking I told her contact the company and a few days later the parts were in her hands FREE of charge and I did the repairs and using OEM parts really makes a big difference . Shame you did not ask on here prior to buying the parts

leaking shower

One of my showers leaks about one gallon every 2 hours। My other shower does not leak a drop। I did some troubleshooting by taking all 3 stems one by one from the good shower and switched them with the ones from the leaky shower। They are exactly the same kind of stems and diverter। After I did this I was left with the same leaky shower faucet leaking with the different stems installed and the other shower that did not leak was still not leaking a drop। If its not my stems or diverter, what can be causing this leak? I also changed the rear seats in the leaky shower even though the ones I took out and replaced looked fine। Thank you for your help.

Try using pipe joint compound like Teflon paste on the theads of the seat.

sewer smell

Hello all, on occasion I get a sewer oder inside my house and can not locate the source. Any suggestions on a logical starting point ? Is there a vent that may be getting clogged ? Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Check all your fixtures to make sure your traps have water in them especially floor and area drains. If you have a house trap check to make sure the plus are on tight and if you have a fresh air in let (FAI) make sure there is nothing blocking it the same for the vent terminal. If all else fails you can do an oil of peppermint or a smoke test
